Whitehorse Primary School

Melbourne, Australia

Overview

Whitehorse Primary School at Blackburn North is designed by Buchan as a series of varied, stimulating learning environments purpose-built to cater for new teaching methods.

Inspiring the design is the concept of a ‘village green’, where a communal outdoor space for gathering and recreation is encircled with buildings. From the entry through landscaped gardens, classrooms organise in a sweeping semi-circle that defines a large central play area or ‘green’. Almost all interior spaces overlook this space and deep verandas provide outdoor shelter for students and shade to the interior.

The school accommodates an Early Learning Centre with its own secure play area, a multi-purpose gym/performance hall and music centre, a kitchen classroom and kitchen garden that are part of the Stephanie Alexander Program, classrooms and breakout spaces, resource centre, staff rooms and a canteen.
