Oasis Broadbeach

Gold Coast, Australia

Overview

A major revamp of Oasis, a 1980s retail and residential development, showcases the very best of the Gold Coast for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The mall location is ideal, but the southern edge of the centre did not successfully interact with mall activity. Buchan’s design successfully activates this critical element with the Central Broadbeach Entertainment Precinct. The centre’s ground floor tenancies now enjoy a retail location shielded from the south-east winds, with uninterrupted winter sun and easy pedestrian access via the mall frontages.

The design for the new awnings, paving, landscaping and lighting opens the dining spaces out to the mall and the main pedestrian boulevard that runs along the northern face of the dining areas. The entry to the shopping centre is clearly identified with a larger roof and coloured vertical fins. The rhythm created by the structural frames of the awning modulate the very linear form of the precinct. The signage enhances the rhythm and strip LED lighting in the posts creates good lighting at night. Large planters with advanced trees reinforce a calming edge.

The result is a design created to transform BroadbeachSurfer’s Parade pedestrian mall into a people-friendly entertainment and events zone.
