Galada Community Centre

Melbourne, Australia

Overview

The new Galada Community Centre sits at the heart of the Aurora Town Centre and reflects its residential context.

Buchan’s architectural design includes pitched roofs that are punctuated with skylights and decorative glazed brickwork to create an interesting face to the main street façade. The entry brickwork features earthy tones inspired by aboriginal inhabitants of the local Galada Creek. The glazed bricks arrange in abstract symbols acting as a place marker to the street corner. The bricks on the west façade arrange in an abstract tree motif mosaic in anticipation of the mature landscape in years to come.

The new centre comprises a kindergarten with three classrooms, a large civic hall with a full commercial kitchen, multipurpose meeting rooms, a community lounge, planning activity group rooms for older adults, Maternal Child Health facilities and car parking. The result is a wonderful destination for the local community.
